How the scoring works
The Website Grader fetches your live page and analyses it across six categories. Each category is scored from 0 to 100 based on real signals found in your HTML, CSS and page structure. The overall score is a weighted average of all six category scores.
Design & Branding (20%), We check for consistent color usage, professional typography, presence of a logo, structured layout with clear sections, and whether the page follows modern design patterns. Sites with inline styles, broken layouts or missing visual hierarchy score lower.
Mobile Experience (20%), We look for responsive design indicators including viewport meta tags, flexible image sizing, media queries and touch-friendly element sizing. Without these, your site likely breaks on mobile devices, where over 60% of UK web traffic now happens.
SEO (20%), We check meta title and description tags, heading structure (H1, H2, H3 hierarchy), presence of structured data (JSON-LD), alt text on images, canonical URLs and semantic HTML. These signals tell Google what your page is about and help it rank.
Performance (15%), We measure page weight (total HTML, CSS and JS size), number of external scripts, presence of render-blocking resources and loading indicators. Heavy pages with dozens of scripts score lower because they load slowly, and Google penalises slow sites.
Content (15%), We assess word count, heading-to-text ratio, presence of clear calls-to-action, contact information visibility and content structure. Pages with thin content, no CTAs or unclear purpose score lower because they don't effectively convert visitors.
Trust & Accessibility (10%), We check for HTTPS (SSL), image alt text, form labels, colour contrast indicators, presence of privacy policy links and accessibility signals like ARIA attributes. These affect both user trust and legal compliance.
Scores are color-coded: 70+ is good, 40–69 needs improvement, and below 40 indicates significant issues. Most small business websites score between 40 and 60, there's usually real room for improvement.
